Thanks for the update, Mojo. Hendley Market is one of my favorite stores. Hope they didn't lose all of their nativities. I'll be watching for updates on LaKings. Thanks again.

When I initially looked in the windows at LaKing's I wasn't sure what I was looking at. I had to step back and look at the facade. A lot of lost history!

Thanks, 69 Chevy, for the report on LaKings even tho that was not what I wanted to hear & I'm so sorry for the loss. Like you said, a lot of history gone.  It can't ever be the same as for as atmosphere, but they still know how to make ice cream & candy & I'm looking forward to them being back in business.

You step up when you walk in LaKings, but I would guess they still took in 3 to 4 feet of water. Hoping they can save the bar and the taffy machine.

Don is trying to get Fullen's Jewelry fully open.  I caught him there friday, and he has run into a few glitches, but he will take orders.

    69 Chevy:

I rode my bike to the Strand yesterday and looked in a lot of windows. I appears that most of the shops ripped out everything that got wet and then stopped.  It looks like there will be 3 or 4 places open for Dickens and a lot of booths.

Post Office seemed to be a little further along. A few places had new sheetrock etc. Written on the Press Box door, "Will Re-Open October(crossed out), November(crossed out), December(crossed out), Soon! Can't wait!!!

    My take on this situation:

The folks on Post Office rode out Ike and followed instinct, we had the same amount of water, but went to work faster on rebuilding, a few of these places started mucking out as soon as the water was down.  The city has yet to clean our street (pls be careful and be on the lookout for nails if you park on the trolley tracks) it is still very muddy after a rain.  Are we being punished by the city for following our instincts?  One business owner was actually stopped by a city employee, as he was washing the street in front of his establishment.  He was told that the city would do this-he was not allowed.  The city has yet to clean our street, and I still pick up a handfull of nails at the cub and throw them away on a daily basis.

I think the city's thinking on the Strand v Post Office Street is the Strand is a tourist mecca, while Post Office is favored by the locals.

I think you both are giving the city too much credit. they are too busy to be punishing , and or weighing which is more important to what or who....

     Update-today's walk.

TSO is OPEN!  I have an appt to have ny eyes checked-they do take UTMB ins.

O'Malley's plans to reopen either friday or sat-and those great deli sandwiches will be served, also!

Much more activity seen on the Strand, but still a lot of empty places.

Luigi's is working on it, but looks a ways from opening.

Be careful when parking at curbside downtown-I'm still picking up a lot of nails.

"If you see a nail, pick it up, then SOMEONE else will have good luck!" (No flat)

    Good to hear about O'Malleys!

Any news on Murphy's? I'm needing a white cheese pizza and Guinness!

How about Molly's and Cellar Door?

Anyone know anything about the peanutbutter warehouse or the railroad museum? Different places keep coming to mind, & I think oh no not them. What a loss if they were flooded.

They both flooded, but I have seen a lot of daily activity at Shearn Moody Plaza (RR Museum) for some time now.

I was at the Shearn Moody Plaza today, they have taken everything out and the walls and floor are gone too.  Only 1 elevator in operation, but they are working on it, so I hope to take the kids for a ride by spring.

That is progress, considering we were 10 years away from being "fully functional" on September 12th!

Go to HurricaneBear.com to get a super cool Tee. It's a TV news screen of Ike, a reporter, and a person in a bear suit dancing on the beach waiting for the storm.

Somebody must have told him a storm was BEARING down and he misunderstood.

Be warned..Mojo got me a XL for my birthday, and it's more like a med/med
