  • Update on Downtown
    11-14-2008 9:18 PM

I will try to keep folks as up to date as possible on downtown openings-as I find out!Stork Club is open, and has been since BEFORE the island was "opened".  They are also serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.  It is a cash only business as they have no landline to process plastic.

Bob's grocery and booze has been opened for awhile. they do take plastic.

Connolly's Corner is open, also on cash basis (no landline for plastic)  Live music tonite! Band sounded great!!

Can't wait for the clothing stores to come around. Shopping in downtown Galveston is pretty much the only shopping I enjoy!

Everything that happens will happen today.

Well, today was my first time back to the Island since Ike. Some parts look like nothing has changed much from the pictures I've seen and other parts are looking better than the pictures. The downtown area and Strand in particular are desolate with the exception of people hard at work cleaning out and rebuilding. I see that as  encouraging. The Harbor House looks good and the workers were hard at it at Fisherman's warf.  Post Office really took a bad hit, didn't it? Lots of activity there, especially at Rudy and Pacos and The Saltwater Grill. Winnie was hit hard, too. But I saw some homes on hard hit streets all clean, freshly painted and newly landscaped.

Everything is going to be ok. Hey, it is going to take a long time for the clean up but it will clean up.

You are unique just like everyone else. Hmm

Mod to have FREE coffee and muffins on the sidewalk tomorrow at 0900 am.

Galveston Bookshop is expected to open in about a week.  The shelves are going in and they are loading up on books.  Word has it that the orange tabby is missing everybody.  The folks at the shop say that the cat is constantly "talking" about missing work.

The Press Club is to open in about 3 weeks.

O'Malleys is expected to open in about 2 weeks.

    Tsunami opened last wednesday

Old Quarter Acoustic is expected to reopen in a couple of weeks (YEA WRECKS!!!)

Paco,Saltwater,Skybar,Madrid, Oysters and Mod have a ways to go.

Maureen does not plan to reopen YGHA gallery.  She has been cleaning up and caring for her watchbirds for now.  The loss of Ygha is heartfelt.

The Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe will not be opening Dec. 5. I'm on Wrecks' email list. I'll let you know when the next re-opening is scheduled.

    Hi everyone!

Just a note to let you know that Galveston Bookshop is back in action, although with a diminshed inventory to start out. We lost nearly 50,000 books on the first level of the store. The second level with all the sci-fi was spared. We took the opportunity to do some remodeling so come on by and have a look.

I rode my bike to the Strand yesterday and looked in a lot of windows. I appears that most of the shops ripped out everything that got wet and then stopped.  It looks like there will be 3 or 4 places open for Dickens and a lot of booths.

Post Office seemed to be a little further along. A few places had new sheetrock etc. Written on the Press Box door, "Will Re-Open October(crossed out), November(crossed out), December(crossed out), Soon! Can't wait!!!

Everything that happens will happen today.
