I am bringing my kids down the week of August 16th. I can see on the Webcams that they are still working on some of the beaches. We like to stay across from the beach and just walk over, but I don't want to be across from where they are working. Can anyone please tell me which areas have been completed? Maybe we can pick accomodations there. Thanks!!

Reef Resort?

Hi all,

We come to Galveston every summer and have stayed at the Reef Resort the past few years. We love that hotel and so do our two dogs :) I have tried to call them a few times yesterday and today with no answer and no recording. Does anyone know if they are open or not...? If not, are they any other hotels that are open that allow dogs? We are hoping to come June 3 - June 5. Thanks so much!!

I plan to come to Galveston mid-July with two old high school girlfriends....we are reuniting after 30 years out of school.

Can you give some suggestions of places to stay that are like a suite. We'd like to each have our own room if possible.

Sand Box Too Condo at the Islander East

BEWARE of this resort. My girlfriends and I, all in our late twenties, booked a girls weekend at this condo last weekend. We are not in any way picky people but this place is unacceptable. Upon arrival we noticed there was NO security. You cannot call one person in a trailer out front security. The owner did not make us aware of this. The door to our room looked as if it had been pryed open with a crowbar and never repaired. There is also a light switch being operated by a FORK! Yes, thats right, a fork. I contacted the owner and she told me that there would be no refund at all. Of course the room was paid in full upon booking. We ventured out and got a room at the Galvestonian and let me tell you they were wonderful. I will not stay anywhere else in Galveston in the future. When we got back to the Islander East to get our things we walk in the door, the phone rings twice and upon answer they hang up. Shortly after we hear what sounds like someone jiggling the door. The owner then tells me the phone call was a telemarketer but has no explanation for the door. As we come off of the elevator ten minutes later on the second floor, not the first, the guy from the trailer is waiting on us asking what is wrong. It was as if someone was watching us while we were there. This place is creepy and not safe for anyone other then some escaped convicts. It can be compared to the Bates Motel. At night it is totally dark allowing anyone to walk up on the property and never be seen. I would not recommend this place to anyone. I was later informed the the property is currently being rented out by FEMA as well. Just wanted to give anyone who may be considering staying here a heads up. I sure wish I would have known.

Mid-July trip

Wanting to come to Galveston in mid-July to do some offshore fishing and beach fishing. Are there plenty of available charters? Also, my 2 on the trip are not interested in doing to much fishing...mostly they want to hang out and have some beers. Are the bars/pubs back up and ready to go?

Also, suggestions on places to stay would be great.

How do you access it from the Seawall?I'm trying to find the best place to stay where there are handicapped facilities and beach access close.Any suggestions or advice?

Hello! A bunch of us are heading down to Galveston to take a cruise on Carnival in June. We will be staying over one night. I am hoping folks in Galveston can offer me advise on a few things:

Airports - Same price to fly to HOU or IAH. However IAH is a direct flight and HOU has a lay over. How far is it really from each airport? Am I better off taking the extra time from IAH to avoid the hassle of a lay over? I need some local experience on the drive into Galveston. We will be flying in on a Sat.

Transportation - How much do taxi's run? Am I better off hiring a shuttle to take us? We have 3 people with baggage.

Hotel - Looking to stay one night. Nothing fancy.. Is there any hotels/motels that would be in walking distance to the port? Any suggestions?

Thanks to anyone that can help! Travel agents are not too kind since I alredy booked the cruise through Carnival and its hard to gage some of this stuff on the web sites.

Anything else I should know, please don't hesitate to add!

Galveston has already had residents begin to move back into the city limits. We though that it would be years for everything to be back to normal. Its nice to see Galveston apartments begin to lease units again to those who want to come back to the city.

Hi y'all, that is my texas jargin i learned on my trip. Just thought i would enter a few posts on some of my findings. I could put everything in 1 post but people who really need the info might miss some so i will catagorize. We stayed @ thrMaravilla resort condos. This was sort of a last minute reserv after my ocean grove was cancelled. Well the Maravilla ia actually right next to ocean grove condos but it is a much older resort. It seemed to me that everybody there were rentals as i was which ids fine but the bldgs need work. The unit i stayed in was an oceanfront unit on the 2nd fl. The blvd was very loud if you sat on the balcony but couldn't hear the traffic inside. The owner of this unit sent me a rental agreement and one paragraph states to report anything wrong on your arrival. Well the closet door in the kitchen was broken and the LR curtains were ripped. I called the owner and informed her and she said she had no idea. So at least i covered my you know what. The unit was clean to the eye but utensils and draws were dirty. Also there were painters painting the bldg and doors. The were using a lime green colored oil-based paint for the doors. There was no notice so as we left our unit (our door was painted first thing in the morning) several of us got oil paint on our hands and clothing. 2 shirts were ruined. I did send an e-mail to the owner of unit and she said she would contact the prop mgmt co on Mon morn. Basically the unit and property were ok and did not ruin anything. If you are looking for a place to stay near the beach do not stay there. There is a small strip of sand but is covered at the higher tide and that leaves justr rocks. We had a few cold drinks, put the suits on , grabbed the chairs and boogie bds and all ran across the blvd to find out there was no beach there. I ran to get the car and we went up to the beach @ 61st. All in all it was ok to stay there. If you want to be up near more stores or action you need to stay north or i guess you islanders call it east of 61st st. Tom from Mass

We own a 2-2 beach house we have used for ourselves and vacation rental. It is fully furnished - dishes, bed and bath linens. Sleeps 11 with 2 sleeper sofas in living room. We are willing to rent it to someone who has been displaced on a six month to one year lease. Home suffered minimal damage from Ike - fully repaired except for Comcast telephone, cable and wireless internet and the new dryer will be installed this week. The utilites will remain in our name and will be reimbursed. We are only looking to cover our expenses to allow someone a nice place to live. We have been down and checked out the condo and everything is working there except the pool. It has water and electric not sure about the cable yet but if you need a place to stay we are offering it for $900 a week. No cleaning fees or other costs. Hi my name is Lisa Owens I am from Massachusetts. My father lived on the island until his death 25 years ago. I was just recently there on vacation and to do some research. Could anybody tell me if there was ever a Donna's Island bar there. That is where my father liked to go after he got out of work. I went to the courthouse when I was there they weren't much help though. Thanks so much for any info given

WOW, on a whim I thought I would check out rates to come visit over LDW, the prices are OUTrageous! Some of the rooms are $75-$100 more a night that weekend-I mayhave to pitch my tent somewhere!

I am coming there on Labor Day and was trying to figure out a place to stay...we were trying to decide between the Harbor House and Best Western. My usual experience with Best Westerns have not been all that good but the one in Galveston looks pretty nice. Has anyone stayed here??

Priced Out of Galveston

My husband and I are nearing retirement and we love Galveston, coming at least twice a year every year bringing our pet with us to stay in pet-friendly lodging. But this year, we were dismayed to discover that our usual lodging, where we've always stayed during the Christmas holidays, has almost doubled in price. We don't understand the degree of increase, especially since there doesn't seem to be much going on in Galveston during the Christmas holidays. Plus, we checked other comparable hotel prices during that same time, and they're much more reasonable. The only problem with them is they don't take pets. Even with our senior discount card, our favorite hotel is much more than it was, and we think it's unreasonable to have to pay that, so we're just going to another Texas coastal town. The prices are much more affordable, they offer many attractions, great dining and it's just a bit further. We do love Galveston, but we have to draw the line somewhere. Maybe other people are willing to pay those exorbitant rates, but the motel is just not that much better to us. Anyone else running into this?

Hi I had reservations @ the Ocean Grove condos for July 12, 13, 13 and departing on the 15th. I e-mailed the owner today to ask about final payment and she informed me she sold the unit and is not available, she will refund my deposit. Well thank you, that's very kind of you southerner. Gee it's June 2 i arrive on July 12th with the family and have no place to stay. I'm searching now but most places are booked. I need a condo for 7 people near the seawall. Anyone have any ideas.
