I was watching a special on Galveston and hurricane Ike on the weather channel and saw that the owners of the bait shop that is over the water had stayed in their home above the shop.

I have to say that I was amazed at their survival. They got extremely lucky.

They didn't say why they didn't evacuate. They looked like relatively young and healthy individuals who could have left.

Does anyone know these people and know why they chose to stay in their establishment when it was obvious it was going to be in so much trouble.

I saw this special too when I was in Galveston a couple weeks ago. What happened, if I remember correctly, is that they were trying to get everything closed and ready for the hurricane and by the time they could leave it was already too late. I especially liked the story of the man from Crystal Beach. You can also see the story if you have access to the magazine "The Islander." There was like a four page spread of it.
