Where do we stand?

I was just going through my Venues page to see where we stand as far as operational live music venues. Before Hurricane Ike, we had about 30-35 venues that were offering live music. A few had live music every weekend, others offered it more infrequently, and some were seasonal outdoor venues.

All of our downtown venues are currently shut down, and reopenings are weeks if not months down the road. Seawall and beach clubs are a mixed bag. B. Jigger's, Captain Jack's, Float and The Spot are open for business. Tragically, we lost the Balinese Room, the Baja Beach Club, and Nash's Bait Camp. We can only hope that the Park Board will rebuild the East Beach Pavilion! It looks like the Blue Hole and Woody's survived more or less intact, too!

Right now, I'm hoping that there may be six places that could offer music if they choose to do so: B. Jigger's, Captain Jack's, Float, The Spot, The Blue Hole, and Woody's. The current telephone problems make it impossible for me to confirm what each of them plans to do, but Captain Jack's and The Spot have offered music since the hurricane!

Unfortunately, at this time, the only music that is currently scheduled is
The Skip Devlin Band will be at The Spot this Sunday, 12 October, from 3-7 pm. Please come out and support The Spot and live music in Galveston, and have a good time with the band.

I urge everyone to contact the six venues listed above and encourage them to start booking live music on a regular basis, because they are the only ones who can for the foreseeable future. As I said last week, we need the spiritual nourishment of Rock and Roll in this time of stress and trauma!
