As a fellow Galvestonian, I was devastated and heartbroken at the destruction of Hurricane Ike. It was hard for me to watch everything from afar and I wanted so badly to be home and comfort all my friends and family that have been affected by Ike. I know Galveston will bounce back in no time at full force. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I am one of those "tourists" that visit Galveston every year. When I cross over the bridge from the mainland, I feel like I am coming home. And when I leave to return to my "real home" it is with deep regret. Perhaps I am one of those souls lost in 1900 still yearning to live there. Who knows. Anyway, if your re-building allows, I will be there in Dec. to cruise. In the meantime, please know you all are in my prayers.

Heber Talor wrote the usual editorial for the GDN -- check out galvnews.com.

I think that he got the location wrong of the orphanage memorial. I think it's at 50th Street by the statue rather than 69th Street (which is where the orphanage was) -- I'm just relying on memory . . . .

Oh, if you thought the calendar was good, check out what Ida May Austin wrote in the book, "Through a Night of Horrors: Voices from the 1900 Storm." I got to read that passage aloud for the Rosenberg Library's commemoration!! Truly an impassioned speech!THANK YOU, Shelly Kelly!

You are welcome but you did the job here. Was there any acknowledgement in the city that you know of? Should of been. Most of the world knows of that dreadful storm. "Hear, hear, here's to the lost souls and those who survived to spawn the decendents who can carry on the stories of one of our nation's worst natural catastrophies."

As for "my" words, I actually paraphrased what I remember from a calender that came out in 1901. Uh, the same one that Christine Hopkins bought a copy of last week. Exactly what were the words, Christine?
